Dr. Charles Michel, an American ophthalmologist in St. Louis, Missouri discovered the concept of Electrolysis in 1869. The good Dr. was looking for a way to remove ingrown eyelash hair (trichiasis).
Dr. Michel experimented with a fine wire attached to a battery. Dr. Michel was the first to use the Galvanic method. His first scientific paper was published in 1875.
Little did Dr. Charles Michel know his simple invention would be perfected by modern technology, studied by career minded individuals in
the field of Electrolysis and offered as a service to clients worldwide. Michel's invention, enables Electrolysis to have the fine distinction of claiming to be the only proven permanent method hair removal.
WHAT IS HAIR?
Hair is an appendage of the skin. Hair protects the body by acting as a thermal insulation. Hair covers the entire body except the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Hair is basically dead cells, made of a strong protein called keratin. As new cells form below the surface of the skin, the visible hair is pushed up and
out, as a process known as growth and shedding.
HOW DOES ELECTROLYSIS WORK?
The Electrolysis process begins by the insertion of a small probe, the size of a hair, which is guided by the Electrologist, into the follicle and down to
the papilla (bottom portion of the hair follicle or bulb). The papilla contains blood, which is responsible for feeding hair for growth and nerves. The Electrologist will send
a small amount of electrical current to destroy the papilla, inducing a chemical reaction. The Electrologist will gently remove the released hair with a special tweezer. If there is any resistance in the hair removal process, the probe will be reinserted to deliver more current, until the hair is removed easily.
If a hair is in the telogen phase, and removed, you
may feel a "pulling" like sensation. This is due to a hard, dry substance at the root called keratin, exiting through a smaller hair opening. It is NOT related or
due to improper plucking and will not delay the
process of Electrolysis.
TREATMENT AND CAUSE OF INCREASED HAIR GROWTH
A series of Electrolysis treatments, to permanently remove unwanted hair, are dependent upon the amount of hair to be removed, the hair growth cycle, the coarseness of the hair and the clients tolerance for the procedure.

- Seizure Medications
- Polycystic Ovaries (PCOS)

- Increase prolactin hormone
- Idiopathic Hirsutism sometimes present without any underlying cause.
Medication and Hair Growth
Some known medications may increase unwanted
hair growth on your body. The chance of drug induced hair growth depends on the type of medication you are taking, the dose of the medicine and the length of time you have been on the medication. It is always advisable to speak with a Physician or Pharmacist, related to the possible side effects of the medicines you have been prescribed. Ask if the medication you are taking
will cause increase hair growth on your body.
Possible Drug Classifications that may cause unwanted hair growth are:
Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is a pimple like
bump area, due to a curly hair that grows under
the skin and does not penetrate the skin surface.
This is also called ingrown hair. PFB may be caused from shaving, waxing or plucking of a hair. PFB may display a dark spot under the skin surface. If you
have gray hair, the raised bump my be white.
Electrolysis and Pregnancy
Scientific documentation related to Electrolysis treatment and Pregnancy is lacking. If you choose Electrolysis, inform the Electrologist that you are pregnant.
Electrolysis Current choices
are extremely important to a pregnant woman and her fetus (baby). The Electrologist should avoid using Galvanic or Blend currents, as amniotic
fluid surrounds the fetus and
is a known conductor of electricity. Thermolysis current
is considered safe and not harmful to the pregnant woman and her fetus.
Electrolysis on the breast should be avoided in the last trimester, if you are planning to breastfeed. The breast and abdomen become more sensitive, related to the increase of hormones, in the last trimester of pregnancy.
Increased hair growth may cease, once the baby has been born.

Galvanic - Direct current induces a chemical reaction
in the follicle, producing a caustic substance called lye (sodium hydroxide), which destroys the hair. Galvanic
is a slower process.
Thermolysis - uses a high frequency alternating current, which destroys the hair with heat. Thermolysis is effective in treating coarse, curved or distorted hair follicles.
Blend - Is a combination of Galvanic and Thermolysis which are used together. Galvanic helps produce the
lye (sodium hydroxide) and the Thermolysis sends the heat, thus creating a heated chemical reaction and an effective way to destroy the bulb. Blend can treat all types of hair.
